Over $760K Verdict Returned for Errors during Hip Surgery

A case centering on a hip surgery performed by an intoxicated surgeon has resulted in a $760,827 verdict in favor of the patient, according to the April 2022 issue of Medical Malpractice Verdicts, Settlements & Experts. An orthopedic surgeon performed a total right hip replacement on a 58-year-old patient in an effort to treat her severe degenerative hip disease. About seven months later, the patient suffered a chronic fracture and the surgeon performed revision surgery. According to the patient, the surgeon made technical errors during the procedure—namely, that the screws used were too long and extended into the soft tissue and the hardware was protruding.
