Whooping Cough on the Rise in Maine; Facility Offers Free Employee Vaccinations

Reported cases of whooping cough in the state of Maine this year have risen from 50 to 125 in the past few weeks, states a June 14, 2012, Bangor Daily News (Maine) article. Last year, the state only recorded 50 reported cases by mid-June. According to data from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, cases of the disease, also known as pertussis, have increased in the counties where it was already present but have not spread to other areas. The data indicates that reports of whooping cough in Somerset and Cumberland counties have nearly doubled since the end of May.
