FBI Inquiries Regarding Power Morcellation Indicate Ongoing Investigation

Healthcare risk managers may be interested in a May 27, 2015, New York Times article examining the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) inquiries into whether medical device manufacturers, physicians, and hospitals violated any laws by failing to disclose the risks associated with hysterectomies involving power morcellators. Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concluded that power morcellators should not be used to perform hysterectomies or remove uterine fibroids for the vast majority of women due to the device's potential to spread undetected cancers to other parts of the body (see the July 16, 2014, HRC Alerts).
