The emerging and often multidrug-resistant fungus Candida**auris continues to be found in U.S. healthcare facilities, according to a May 19, 2017, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC, which reported the first seven cases of C. auris in 2016 (seeHRC Alerts, November 9, 2016: Transmission of Multidrug-Resistant Fungus at U.S. Healthcare Facilities), has received 77 clinical reports of the fungus as of May 12, 2017. The vast majority of cases were identified in the New York City metropolitan area (53 in New York, 16 in New Jersey). The New York and New Jersey cases occurred in multiple healthcare facilities, but investigations found most of the patients "had overlapping stays at interconnected long-term care facilities and acute care hospitals within a limited geographic area." Nearly all patients had multiple underlying medical issues and extended exposure to a healthcare facility.
