The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has announced the publication of a final rule that will require certain employers to electronically submit injury and illness data that they are already required to record on their onsite OSHA Injury and Illness forms to the agency's website, making the information publically available and enabling the agency to analyze data more effectively and use its enforcement resources more efficiently. Under the new rule, which takes effect August 10, 2016, with phased in data submissions begin in 2017, all establishments with 250 or more employees in industries covered by the recordkeeping regulation must electronically submit injury and illness information from OSHA Forms 300, 300A, and 301; establishments with 20 to 249 employees in certain high-risk industries must electronically submit information from OSHA Form 300A only. Through the rule, OSHA hopes to encourage employers to improve workplace safety through public accountability.
