Joint Commission Says Providers May Now Send Orders by Secure Text Messages

​The Joint Commission announced that, effective immediately, it has lifted its five-year ban on transmitting orders through text message in light of the increased availability of several secure communication platforms. The announcement, which appears in the May 2016 issue of Perspectives on Patient Safety, states that "licensed independent practitioners or other practitioners in accordance with professional standards of practice, law and regulation and policies and procedures may text orders as long as a secure text messaging platform is used and the required components of an order are included."
