Hospital readmission rates for adult patients, based on payer source, range from 8.7 readmissions for every 100 admissions in the privately insured population to 17.2 for Medicare beneficiaries, according to an analysis of patient readmissions from January through November 2011. Readmission rates per 100 admissions were 14.6 for Medicaid patients and 10.6 for the uninsured. The analysis, conducted by the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, was published in April 2014. Readmission was defined as a subsequent hospital admission within 30 days following an original admission.
