Diagnostic errors and improper performance of a medical procedure were the most common allegations against internal medicine physicians from 1985 through 2009, according to closed claims data published online April 28, 2014, in JAMA Internal Medicine. The data, reported by PIAA (formerly the Physician Insurers Association of America), included 247,073 closed claims, of which 33,747 (13.7%) involved internal medicine physicians.
