The Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a report on April 8 recommending that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology consider including five domains of social and behavioral determinants of health in stage 3 meaningful use requirements for electronic health record (EHR) systems. These five domains include sociodemographic (e.g., sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, education), psychological (e.g., health literacy, stress), and behavioral information (e.g., dietary habits, physical activity), as well as measures regarding individual social relationships and neighborhoods/communities.
