Jury Awards $2.75 Million for Hemorrhage following Wisdom Tooth Extraction and Lack of Informed Consent

A Michigan jury returned a verdict of $2.75 million for a patient who required emergency evacuation to a level one trauma center to treat a hemorrhage that occurred after removal of a wisdom tooth, according to an article in the December 2022 Medical Malpractice Verdicts, Settlements & Experts.

The 32-year-old patient sought care from the defendant oral surgeon for removal of his lower left wisdom tooth. An x-ray taken during the initial visit revealed a dark spot near the affected tooth, and the oral surgeon recommended that the patient undergo a biopsy and ordered a computed tomography (CT) scan without contrast to evaluate whether the lesion was cancerous.
