Report: Newborns Account for Costliest and Most Frequent Liability Claims

​Infants one month or younger account for the most claims as well as the highest cost of pediatric medical liability claims paid, according to a report released recently by The Doctors Company, a medical malpractice insurer. The report analyzes 1,215 claims that were closed between 2008 and 2017. Cases involving infants one month or younger accounted for 173 claims and resulted in a median indemnity payment of $300,000 and a median expense paid of $119,311, according to the report.
