Diagnostic errors were the leading cause of closed professional liability claims against primary care physicians from 2013 through 2017, according to a March 2019 report from Coverys, a liability insurer. Diagnosis-related claims accounted for 46% of the claims Coverys studied and 68% of paid indemnity. Nearly half (45%) of common injuries in diagnosis-related cases involved patient death.
