Family members often provide unique safety information that would otherwise be missed during hospital safety reporting, according to an article published February 27, 2017, in JAMA Pediatrics. Families can be "valuable partners" in safety surveillance, the authors said. The authors conducted a prospective cohort study of 717 parents and caregivers of patients 17 years or younger hospitalized at one of four pediatric centers between December 2014 and July 2015. Participants were asked to detail any safety incidents that occurred during the hospital stay.
