Duodenoscope Sampling and Culturing: New Guidance

​Voluntary standardized protocols for duodenoscope surveillance sampling and culturing were published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), along with other endoscope culturing experts and endoscope manufacturers, on February 26, 2018. Surveillance protocols aim to identify bacterial contamination that may remain after device reprocessing. The guidelines update an interim 2015 protocol from CDC and address concerns raised by ASM. Facilities that choose to implement such measures for duodenoscope reprocessing may find these protocols useful in monitoring the quality of their efforts, FDA said.
