CLABSI Data Now Available on CMS’s Hospital Compare Website

The Hospital Compare website will now include data on the incidence of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) in hospital intensive care units, states a February 7, 2012, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) press release. According to the press release, these infections result in thousands of deaths each year and nearly $700 million in added costs to the U.S. healthcare system. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in 2009, there were about 41,000 CLABSI incidences in U.S. hospitals, and studies show that up to 25% of patients who acquire a CLABSI die from the infection.
