Joint Commission Updates Sentinel Event Statistics through 2012

The Joint Commission provides sentinel event statistics for 2012 in a February 7, 2013, update of its sentinel event data summary web page. Of the 901 total events reported in 2012, unintended retention of a foreign body (115); wrong-patient, wrong-site, or wrong-procedure surgery (109); delay in treatment (107); patient suicide (85); and operative and postoperative complications (83) were among the most frequently reported.
