Simple Bedside Questionnaire Comparable to Larger Screening Tool in Assessing Falls Risk
February 8, 2012 | Strategic Insights for Health System
A simple bedside questionnaire regarding patients’ toileting behavior may be used as a quick screening tool of fall risk, reports a study published in the January 2012 issue of Geriatric Nursing. The study compared the effectiveness of a two-question self-reported questionnaire with that of an existing state-based falls assessment screening tool (STRATIFY). The two items on the questionnaire asked patients “While you are in hospital, what would you do if you need to go to the toilet later?” and “Are you worried that you may fall over on your way there (to the toilet)?” Multiple-choice answers were not provided, and each patient’s response was recorded verbatim.
