Patients who leave the hospital without being seen are at risk of adverse events, and every instance is a potential liability risk for the organization and also a potential violation of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires a medical screening examination and necessary stabilizing treatment for all patients who present to the emergency department (ED) and request medical care.
