Four Specialty Groups Most at Risk for Malpractice Claims

A disproportionate number of physicians are involved in the majority of malpractice claims, said a report in the New England Journal of Medicine. Over a recent 10-year period, approximately 1% of physicians accounted for 32% of paid claims. More than half the claims came from four specialty groups: internal medicine (15%), obstetrics and gynecology (13%), general surgery (12%), and family medicine (11%). Multiple instances of past malpractice were also predictive.
