A reminder to review current cybersecurity policies and procedures is among the Recommendations to Providers Regarding Cyber Security issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on January 13, 2017. Several hospitals in the United States experienced cybersecurity attacks in 2016, CMS said, and one of the largest diagnostic laboratories in India suffered a data breach that allowed hackers access to at least 35,000 medical records. Primary concerns of a cyberattack are the ways in which it can disrupt patient care. The attacks, CMS said, can lead to several adverse events including incomplete discharge instructions and missing patient information on orders, as well as violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) because of compromised personal identifiable information. These attacks can also cause a facility to temporarily close or suspend operations.
