The design of a healthcare facility environment can enhance patient safety and prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), says Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., the former director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in the introduction to a special journal supplement on understanding the role of facility design in preventing HAIs. AHRQ funded a research project that resulted in a series of papers on the topic and were published in a supplement to the December issue Health Environments Research & Design Journal.
