Annually, hospitals across the nation report 600 to 1,600 newborn falls, but the actual number of such incidents is likely higher, according to a nurse manager who has written about preventing newborn falls and was quoted in a January 16, 2015, Philadelphia Inquirer article. Separately, the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority, which contracts with ECRI Institute to collect and analyze safety reports submitted by healthcare organizations, found that over nine and a half years, healthcare facilities in the state reported almost 300 incidents in which an infant was dropped, fell, was bumped, or suffocated while breast-feeding. The findings were described in the September 2014 Pennsylvania Patient Safety Advisory.
