New Requirements for Nonprofit Hospitals Limit Hospital Billing of Needy Patients

Regulations published by the Internal Revenue Service in the December 31 Federal Register are intended to "clarify broadly worded provisions of the Affordable Care Act," according to the New York Times. They require nonprofit hospitals to determine the patient income level below which they will offer financial aid to patients and to review this determination for each patient before sending a case to debt collection.
