Bariatric Surgery Associated with Long-Term Survival in Older Male Patients

Patients with severe obesity who underwent bariatric surgery had lower all-cause mortality at 5 and 10 years after the procedure when compared with matched control patients who did not have surgery, according to the results of a study published in the January 6, 2015, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study evaluated the outcomes of 2,500 patients who underwent bariatric surgery in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) bariatric centers from 2000 to 2011.
