Workplaces are "only truly sustainable when they ensure the safety, health, and welfare of their workers," wrote the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in a white paper titled Sustainability in the Workplace: A New Approach for Advancing Worker Safety and Health. Sustainability, OSHA said in a press release, "strives to balance social, environmental, and economic considerations to achieve long term success and viability," and is based on the "three Ps"—people, profit, and planet. Recent sustainability efforts have focused on environmental issues, OSHA said, and attention is now turning to other aspects, including occupational safety and health.
