Taking Action: Disparities in End-of-Life Care

Research has repeatedly confirmed that members of racial and ethnic minority groups are more likely to experience disparities in care, including increased risk of being uninsured or underinsured, lacking access to care, and worse health outcomes for treatable and preventable conditions. Despite increased attention on addressing these disparities, they remain pervasive, including in end-of-life care:
Understanding, detecting, and eliminating such disparities is an essential component of patient safety, and at the ends of their lives, it is critical for ensuring patients receive equitable care congruent with their preferences in a respectful manner. Healthcare organizations must be willing to make both short- and long-term commitments to address inequities that are reflected in the organization's mission, strategic plans, safety culture, and care delivery systems.
