Data Snapshot: Rising Age of Women at First Birth

​Women age 35 or older had a steadily increasing rate of first births from 1976 to 2012, with an accompanying increase in the risk to both maternal and fetal health, according to a May 2014 report from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The rate of first births increased fastest among mothers age 35 to 39 but also increased among mothers age 40 to 44.
