A key responsibility of healthcare risk managers is to educate the governing body and medical, nursing, technical, support, volunteer, and executive staffs on the purposes and goals of risk management and its positive impact on patient safety. Risk managers must create an atmosphere in which open communication and informal discussion with employees are welcome. By introducing themselves and remaining visible and accessible, risk managers can learn of potential problems and strive to correct them before losses occur. Such actions also increase staff members’ comfort level in approaching the risk manager about any concerns risk management or patient safety concerns.
