Hospitals, healthcare entities, and various other entities have legal obligations to report to and query the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB). Congress authorized the data bank with the goal of preventing practitioners with damaging professional backgrounds from moving from state to state, or hospital to hospital, without disclosure or discovery of their adverse professional histories and malpractice payments and to prevent fraud and abuse in federally funded healthcare programs.
