​The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), unlike the Joint Commission, has the authority to inspect the premises of healthcare facilities without prior notice. An inspection will generally occur for one of two reasons: to investigate specific device problems or to conduct an audit for compliance with user reporting requirements contained in federal law and regulation.
