Healthcare facilities that use antishock trousers* should be aware of all risk management issues that arise from their use. Deflation procedures for antishock trousers are an especially important risk management issue because improper deflation may cause serious injury or patient death. Recently, some facilities have raised additional concerns about antishock trousers, either because the devices have eluded the scrutiny of the Food and Drug Administration and the Medical Device Amendment of 1976 or because research has cast doubt on the devices' effectiveness.
