Ask HRC: When Patients Do Not Want to Pay for Postacute Services

​A Healthcare Risk Control(HRC) member recently asked for guidance in handling patients who require postacute care services (e.g., nursing home, assisted living) but do not wish to pay for them. In these scenarios, the member notes, the patients are sufficiently stable to be discharged, but physicians, physical therapists, or other staff believe they cannot yet safely care for themselves at home.
