The media relations department for a healthcare organization has several purposes: to inform the public and surrounding community of beneficial health services or programs; to publicize, through various media, significant research or treatment programs; to educate the public on important health issues; and to officially represent the facility and respond to public inquiries when newsworthy events (both positive and negative) occur. First and foremost, the media relations department must protect the rights and confidentiality of the patients served by the facility and the image and reputation of the facility at all times and in all information it disseminates.
