The 7 T MR Environment: Knowing the Risks

Advances in superconductive magnet fabrication and electronics have made possible MR scanners with magnetic strengths higher than 3 tesla (T). In 2017, FDA granted the first 510(k) clearance for a clinical 7 T MR system. In 2020, a second vendor was granted 510(k) clearance for a 7 T scanner.
Although 7 T scanners are most commonly used as research devices, these systems are starting to be used in clinical imaging. Several applications have received clinical use authorization, and the number of 7 T scanners adopted in clinical settings is increasing.
Before implementing a 7 T scanner, facilities will need to account for the effects associated with the increased magnetic field strength of these systems. MR scanners of all types pose risks to patients and staff. In the presence of a 7 T magnetic field, however, potentially...
