The 7 T MR Environment: Knowing the Risks

Advances in superconductive magnet fabrication and electronics have made possible MR scanners with magnetic strengths higher than 3 tesla (T). In 2017, FDA granted the first 510(k) clearance for a clinical 7 T MR system. In 2020, a second vendor was granted 510(k) clearance for a 7 T scanner.

Although 7 T scanners are most commonly used as research devices, these systems are starting to be used in clinical imaging. Several applications have received clinical use authorization, and the number of 7 T scanners adopted in clinical settings is increasing.
