In-line blood warmers are used to heat fluids as they are infused into the patient. The warming of fluids such as whole blood, blood products, intravenous (IV) solutions, and irrigation solutions helps to maintain the patient’s core body temperature, minimizing adverse thermal reactions such as hypothermia.

The Paladin Biomedical ThermoStat 900 blood and solution warmer is the only in-line warmer we know of that uses microwave heating. This design makes the ThermoStat 900 very fast. It also avoids the use of a water bath, a component that is often a breeding ground for pathogens that could endanger patients. Many of the other warmers on the market, in contrast, do use a water bath.

Although the ThermoStat 900 is not without drawbacks, we believe these are vastly outweighed by its benefits. Facilities that are in the market to buy a blood and solution warmer should give this one serious consideration.
