The Philips HeartStart OnSite is a good choice for both first-responder and PAD applications. It is very easy to use, very lightweight, and portable. It provides very clear voice prompts on how to operate the device and apply the electrodes, and it provides optional voice prompts that give detailed CPR instructions. The electrode cartridge is very obvious and easy to open. The unit requires minimal battery maintenance and greatly exceeded our criterion for battery-powered operating time. It also has an extensive self-test: The OnSite sends a current through the electrodes to be sure that they are connected and the gel is still hydrated.
