  • Used to create short-term vascular access for the delivery of fluids, medications, and contrast media, as well as for blood sampling.
  • Major components:
    • Needle—used to access the vessel
    • Catheter—a small flexible cannula that covers the needle (except for the tip) and, after insertion, remains in the arm
      • Available sizes
        • Gauges: 18-24 G
        • Lengths: 0.56-1.75 in
      • Pressure rating—power injection supported, at a maximum pressure of 300 psi
  • Stabilization platform—wings intended to help secure the catheter to the patient
