Comparing Dose in CT: The CTDI, DLP, and Effective Dose

April 1, 2010 | Evaluations & Guidance

For years, computed tomography (CT) dosimetry was focused primarily on helping physicists ensure that CT systems were operating within expected limits. Only recently have dose metrics been routinely displayed and used by clinical users to help monitor the dose delivered to individual patients. Three metrics are now widely used: CT dose index (CTDI), dose length product (DLP), and effective dose. (See the tableĀ for a summary.)
