About 220,000 of the estimated 4.2 million cases of functional mitral regurgitation are severe and symptomatic, and this population has an unmet need for effective treatments. Catheter-based annuloplasty devices would likely be indicated for certain subsets of these patients, such as those deemed unsuitable for open heart surgery. The catheter approach for each device would also likely affect which subset of patients is eligible for a particular device. Physicians will require positive outcomes data from large randomized trials to fully accept this technology.
