​​Restraint use has the power to humiliate, terrify, injure, or even kill an individual. To reduce the risk of psychological and physical injury posed by restraints—and to comply with Joint Commission standards and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations and state laws and regulations—facilities must ensure that restraints are used only when necessary and in an appropriate and safe manner, that restrained residents are closely monitored, and that restraints are removed as soon as possible.
