SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) is a standardized situational briefing technique that, when used properly, can help people communicate necessary information in a concise, to-the-point way. SBAR can be used anytime such focused communication is necessary. Occasions on which the use of standardized situational briefing is especially important include handoffs and times when personnel have concerns about the patient’s condition. Risk managers may place the tools in this sample policy in strategic locations (e.g., near phones) or use it as a “cheat sheet,” such as during huddles. They may also hand out the pocket cards to staff.
