December 30, 2016 | Aging Services Risk, Quality, & Safety Guidance
Four out of five healthcare organizations with 100,000 or more employees reported a data breach in 2015, according to a November 2016 survey by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics and the Health Care Compliance Association. Company size was a major predictor of whether a healthcare organization had a data breach. More than half (51%) of organizations with more than 1,000 employees reported a data breach, and 81% of those with 100,000 or more reported one. Forty-nine percent of respondents reported a data breach, but 38% of respondents reported that they experienced no breaches in 2016, up 6 percentage points from the previous survey, which the authors called remarkable. Meanwhile, 14% of respondents said they did not know whether they had a data breach.
