A new practice guideline addressing postoperative delirium in older adults is available from the American Geriatrics Society (AGS). Developed by a multispecialty, multidisciplinary expert panel, the Clinical Practice Guideline for Postoperative Delirium in Older Adults is designed to enable healthcare organizations to implement actionable, evidence-based measures to improve the clinical care of adults age 65 or older through the prevention and treatment of delirium in the postoperative setting. The recommendations are based on studies that involved both surgical and nonsurgical patient cohorts and include nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions that should be implemented perioperatively for the prevention and treatment of postoperative delirium.
