Skilled Nursing Accounts for High Percentage of Closed Claims, CNA Reports

Skilled nursing facilities accounted for a "disproportionately high percentage of closed claims" in CNA's claims database, according to the insurer CNA's Aging Services Claims Report 2014. The report compares closed professional liability claims from 2007 through 2011 (the 2012 data set) with claims from 2012 and 2013 (the 2014 data set). The average total paid for closed claims in skilled nursing facilities decreased by 8% (from $218,072 in the 2012 data set to $200,837 in the 2014 data set). The frequency of closed claims in assisted-living facilities decreased by 0.1%, but the average total paid increased by 10% (from $205,370 to $225,542).
