Take a Load Off: Mechanical Lifts Can Significantly Reduce Workplace Injury
July 28, 2017 | Aging Services Risk, Quality, & Safety Guidance
Implementation of a safe resident handling program involving mechanical lifts in nursing homes reduced workers' compensation claims overall and reduced claims related to resident handling in 72% and 82% of nursing homes, respectively, over a six-year period, according to a recent study funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Staff at nursing homes have higher rates of work-related bone and muscle injuries than do workers in other industries, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many of these injuries result from manual lifting or moving of residents.
