What's the news. Despite the potential dangers of prescribing transdermal fentanyl patches to opioid-naïve patients, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) says one long-term care pharmacy has reported an increase in emergency department physicians prescribing the medication for older patients being discharged to long-term care facilities.
