The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Bed Handles, Inc., have announced a voluntary recall of 113,000 portable bed handles for adults, according to a May 20, 2014, recall summary from CPSC. The handles being recalled were sold from 1994 through 2007 and do not have safety retention straps. When the handles are attached to the bed without safety retention straps, the handle can shift out of place, leaving a gap between the handle and the side of the mattress. Three people have died from becoming entrapped: a resident of an assisted-living facility, a resident of a managed care facility, and a resident of an adult family home.
