The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced proposed revisions to the Skilled Nursing Facilities Prospective Payment System (SNF PPS) and the Medicare Hospice Benefit for fiscal year 2019 that include increased reimbursement payments to SNFs and simplified payment models, according to a CMS news release issued on April 27, 2018. The increased payments are slated to take effect October 1, 2018, and the new Patient Driven Payment Model will follow in October 2019. The model includes simplified paperwork requirements for performing patient and resident assessments and allowing individuals to choose a SNF that is tailored to their specific healthcare needs. Payment to SNFs would be based on the conditions being treated rather than the type of services provided.
