Let's Talk About Sexual Expression in Nursing Homes

​In an effort to develop a resident-centered approach to sexual expression in long-term care, researchers surveyed prospective residents to determine their perceptions of sexual expression in nursing homes, as well as what factors affect their perceptions. Survey results, published in the February 2019 issue of The Gerontologist, consisted of 389 responses from individuals ages 43 to 84 years and revealed a high average approval of sexual expression in long-term care—earning a rating of 5 on a scale of 7. However, "approval" came with caveats. For example, most respondents supported sexual expression specifically among established couples.
