Information available on file-sharing websites commonly used by hackers could provide easy instructions for obtaining electronic health record data from healthcare providers, including nursing homes, according to a February 18, 2014, Wall Street Journal article. The article, based on an investigation by a St. Louis-based cybersecurity company, yielded not only those instructions but also details on equipment, software, passwords, and Internet addresses for computers and networked medical devices used by three New York nursing homes, which could be further exploited by would-be hackers. The investigation cited by the article found 375 examples of attacks that successfully compromised healthcare provider security in just two months—September and October 2013.
